LABORATORY

In the laboratory of the Department of Animal Sciences assays on the quality of animal feed and products of animal origin are routinely carried out. A specialised section for the computerised evaluation and cryoconservation of the semen is also present. The analyses normally carried out on animal foodstuff involve the nutrient composition and the fatty acid profile, while those on human food of animal origin concentrate on the nutritional value and the sensory and technological properties.
On live animals a number of parameters are assessed such as the metabolism and the bio-availability of certain nutrients, the oxidative state and the antioxidant capacity. These analysis are possible thank to the numerous and sophisticated pieces of equipment that are available in the laboratory (gas-chromatograph, HPLC, UV spectrophotometer, etc.).
